Living as a student on subsidies from month to month is exhausting. Now that my summer job and at the same time the improvement in my financial situation has been canceled, I have had to think about the financial issues for the coming summer (and autumn) completely new. In the darkest moments of winter, I was already so desperate that I wondered how much I could make from the hard-to-collect Moomin mug collection.
I decided to consciously monitor the spending of money and make posture movements in one direction and another. I developed myself a checklist by means of which I have already managed to save money with the help of my own choices:
Do you always have to pay for everything? It is advisable to harness the skills of friends and acquaintances: haircuts, massages, repairs… Money can be replaced with a counter-service or you can trust that a friend is known in an emergency.
The library's versatile services are at our disposal again: the reading room era and newspapers, books and music, the libraries also borrow games, movies and even musical instruments!
Make the most of -30% discounts at stores & -60% discounts starting after nine o'clock: most I buy bread and meat that I freeze for later use. “Rotten counter” time is history, a smart person will take advantage of these offer. When cooking, I always make a bigger amount at a time, from which I freeze one-serving cans into the freezer.
In Joensuu, cycling is easy, and I always ride a bike - whatever the weather is. This sometimes requires a bit of attitude, but in summer, the bike will roll easily to any place.
Hobbies don’t always require money - the internet and social media are packed with yoga, dancing and exercise programs that you can do yourself, without expensive gym fees.
Wherever you go, always remember to ask, "Do you have a student card discounts?" I am often surprised that a student discounts also can be found in the places where they are not advertised immediately on the wall. The problems of the financial situation also affect us students, so there is no shame in taking advantage of the discounts that belong to us.
Put everything to yourself in unnecessary circulation at the flea markets! When I did my annual spring cleaning, clothes and stuff were found in the closets and storage, which I look forward to being able to put on circulation. You don’t always have to even pay to make this work, for online flea marketers and some outdoor flea markets are free!
Instead of buying something with bottle money right away, save them in a jar. At regular intervals I go to deposit coins and so at once there is a bigger amount of money to spend.
One more reminder to myself: it's nice to still drink my morning coffee from those Moomin mugs, some things just can't be replaced by money.
Again, no one got to know about my floral panties or the sweat-yellowed bra I sat on at the three-hour meeting. At school, I was known as the person who dressed stylishly and put on makeup on daily - or at least that’s how I would characterize myself.
